Rodney Classroom

Rodney Classroom data protection statement

Last updated: 22 October 2026

The short version. Rodney Classroom collects as little as possible. Staff choose a first name or nickname and a cartoon picture for each child. We never ask for surnames, photos, dates of birth, addresses or any special category information. There are no adverts, no in-app purchases and no play statistics. You can keep everything on one device so nothing about the children leaves your setting.

Who is responsible

Your setting (the nursery, pre-school, childminder or school) decides which children use Rodney Classroom and what is typed into it, so your setting is the controller of the children's information.

Rodney Classroom is provided by Stephen Payne, a sole trader trading as Rodney the Raindrop, in the United Kingdom. When class sync is switched on, we store the class on your behalf and act as your processor: we only use the information to run Rodney Classroom for you, under your instructions.

For the information we collect about staff when you start a trial or ask for an invoice, we are the controller.

Please use first names or nicknames only. If two children share a name, add an initial or a nickname rather than a surname.

Class sync

Class sync keeps the same children and progress on every device in your setting. It is on by default and can be switched off in Staff area → Settings → Devices. With it off, everything stays in that device's browser and we never see it.

With it on, the class is linked to your Classroom code, not to any child's identity. It is stored with Cloudflare, which runs our servers. [CHECK: confirm Cloudflare's data processing terms and international transfer safeguards for KV storage, and name the storage region if you restrict it]

Anyone who has both your Classroom code and staff PIN can open the class, so please keep them private. The staff PIN is stored only as a one-way scrambled value (a hash).

What we hold about staff

When you start a trial or ask for an invoice we keep: the setting's name, type and town, the contact's name and work email, the plan chosen, and any purchase order number and invoice address you give. We use these to run your licence and send invoices. Invoices are created and paid through Stripe under its own privacy policy. We keep invoice records for 6 years for tax purposes.

What we don't do

How long we keep things

InformationHow long
A child removed by staffTheir name and progress are deleted straight away (on other devices at their next sync)
The class on our serverWhile your licence is active, then 90 days after it ends so you can renew, then deleted

Requests and complaints

To get a copy of your class's information, correct it or have it deleted, email us from your setting's address and include your Classroom code. We'll reply within one month. Parents should contact the setting first, as the setting is the controller.

You can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO): ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint.

If your setting needs a written data processing agreement, ask us and we'll send one.
