Privacy Policy
The short version. There are no accounts and no adverts, and we never sell information. Your children's names and photos stay on your device unless you turn on family sync, and photos never leave it. We collect anonymous play statistics to make the game better, and you can switch them off in the Grown-ups area.

1. Who we are
The Adventures of Rodney the Raindrop is run by Stephen Payne, a sole trader trading as Rodney the Raindrop, in the United Kingdom. We are the “controller” of the personal information described here, which means we decide how it's used and are responsible for looking after it under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018).
Contact: info@rodneytheraindrop.com
2. Information kept only on your device
When you set up Rodney, the following is saved in your browser's storage on your phone, tablet or computer. We can't see it unless you turn on family sync (section 3).
- Each child's name or nickname, chosen explorer picture and age group (2–4 or 5–6)
- Profile photos, if you add one. These are never uploaded, even with family sync on.
- Progress: adventures finished, game levels and stars, stickers, raindrops, streaks
- Gifts you send, including the reason, who it's from and any message you write
- Wishes: the stickers a child has asked for (up to 5), and the monthly spending limit if you set one
- Raindrop wallets and family members: the name each grown-up is known by (for example "Grandma Jean"), what was added to their wallet, and the gifts and messages they sent. This is stored with your family code on our servers so gifts reach the children. Invited family members never see your family code, your settings or other people's wallets.
- Settings such as sound, narrator voice and each child's break reminder time
To remove it, delete a child's profile in the Grown-ups area or clear your browser's data for this site.
3. Family sync (optional)
If you turn on family sync, we store a copy of your family's game save on our servers so it can appear on your other devices. This includes everything in section 2 except photos. It's linked to a random family code, not to your name or email.
We use this information only to provide sync and to restore purchases. Our legal basis is that it's needed to provide the service you've asked for (contract).
Anyone who has your family code can see and change your family's progress, so please keep it private.
4. Purchases
Payments are handled by Stripe. Stripe collects your payment details, email address and billing country under its own privacy policy. We never receive your full card number.
We receive and keep: your email address, what you bought, the price, the date, and the family code and child profile it was for. We use this to deliver your purchase, manage Club membership, handle refunds and keep financial records. Our legal bases are contract and our legal obligation to keep tax records.
5. Anonymous play statistics
To understand which adventures and games children enjoy, where they get stuck, and to fix problems, the game sends us play statistics. They are designed to be anonymous and minimal.
What is sent
- A random code for the device and a random code for each child profile (they don't reveal who you are)
- The child's age group, but never their name, photo or anything you type
- What happened in the game: for example “started the Niagara Falls adventure”, “finished Learn to count level 2 with 3 stars in 2 minutes”, “bought a sticker”, “a grown-up sent a birthday gift” (never the message), “break reminder shown”, and error reports
- Technical details: device type, operating system, browser, language, time zone, screen size and game version
- Approximate location (country, region and town) and the name of your internet provider, worked out by our hosting provider from your connection. We don't store your IP address, and this can't identify your home or street.
- How you found us, such as a friend's share link or the website that sent you
Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in improving the game and keeping it working, which we've balanced against your family's privacy by keeping the information minimal and pseudonymous.
You can turn statistics off at any time in Grown-ups area → “Safe for your child”. Any statistics still waiting on your device are deleted when you do.
Share links
If you use “Share Rodney”, the link contains a short part of your device's random code. When a new family opens Rodney from your link, we count it towards your link. We can't tell who you or they are.
6. Websites and services the game uses
- Cloudflare hosts the game, family sync and statistics. Like any web host, it handles your IP address to deliver pages and protect the service.
- Google Fonts supplies the game's lettering. Your browser downloads the fonts from Google, which means Google receives your IP address.
- Narrator voices: Rodney reads aloud using the text-to-speech voices on your device. Some voices, such as the Google voices in Chrome, send the words being read to the voice provider to turn them into speech. This includes gift messages when they're read out. You can pick a different voice in the game's settings.
- Stripe processes payments (see section 4).
7. Cookies and local storage
Rodney doesn't use cookies. It does use your browser's local storage:
| What | Why | Can you turn it off? |
|---|---|---|
| Game save and settings | Remembers profiles, progress and settings so the game works | No, the game needs it. You can delete it at any time. |
| Family code | Keeps this device in sync with your family's other devices | Only stored if you turn on sync |
| Device code and waiting statistics | Anonymous play statistics (section 5) | Yes, in the Grown-ups area |
8. Children
Rodney is made for young children, so we follow the ICO's Age Appropriate Design Code. In practice this means:
- no adverts, no chat and no way for strangers to contact a child
- no profiling of children for marketing
- no location tracking beyond approximate town or region
- purchases, sync and settings only from the Grown-ups area
- information collected about children is kept to the minimum needed
Grown-ups decide what name to give each child's profile. A nickname works just as well.
9. Who we share information with
We never sell information and we never share it for advertising. We only share it with the service providers named above (Cloudflare, Stripe and Google), who act on our instructions or under their own privacy policies, and with authorities if the law requires it.
Some of these providers may process information outside the UK. When they do, they use legal safeguards approved under UK law, such as the UK International Data Transfer Addendum or the UK Extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.
10. How long we keep things
| Information | How long |
|---|---|
| On your device | Until you delete the profile or clear your browser data |
| Family sync save | Until you ask us to delete it |
| Purchase records | 6 years, as required for tax records |
| Detailed play statistics | 90 days. After that they're combined into daily totals that can't be linked to a device. |
11. Your rights
You can ask us to give you a copy of your family's information, correct it, delete it, restrict how we use it, or send it to you in a reusable format. You can also object to how we use the play statistics, or simply switch them off.
To make a request, email us. For family sync data, include your family code so we can find it. We'll reply within one month.
12. Contact and complaints
Questions about privacy: info@rodneytheraindrop.com
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, please tell us first. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO): ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint, telephone 0303 123 1113.
We'll update this policy when the game changes and show the date at the top.
